“…breaking out in goosebumps. Oh, perfect. Like I need to look any more pathetic.” “Oh, fantastic. My own personal hell, now, with double the tormentors.” Two quotes that genuinely had me busting up while reading. First off, why am I laughing in Erotic Horror??? Second, and most importantly, why did I hear the sarcasm in my head? Like I just heard a girl being like “oh look, just one more thing.” I know I shouldn’t laugh, especially when you read this book because its not a happy story line but I was having a grand time reading this one.
This book is exactly what I love to read when I think Asylum vibes. I want to have a mind fuck moment and at the end of the book be like “what in the world just happened?” Now was this an over the top “OH MY WORD” mind fuck? No. But it definitely was enough that I walked away smiling because I loved how it toyed with my mind. Don’t get me wrong, I had a feeling with where we were going with this ending but I loved the journey the entire time. Like hello, I love this so much!!
Writhe is about a girl named Eliza. She is admitted to the asylum after she killed her fiancé and family. While she is at the asylum, she is a strong woman that doesn’t want to conform to what the doctors intend for her life. They want her to walk a straight line. They have xyz expectations of her. But she isn’t going to conform to those expectations. No, she is going to stand strong and not loose herself in the mess of the asylum and the drugs they are pumping her with during her stay. She will stand tall!
That is until the Doctor tries to break her spirit and get her to conform to his desires. He will break her at any cost. The plan is simple, break her so she becomes his pet. How will he break her though? At what costs? But most importantly, what is real and what is all inside her head?
Author KT Maddan continues to surprise me with her change in writing styles. We have gone from cowboys to why choose college romance, to horror. Yet she continues to show just how well she can adapt to any style she is writing. I loved the mind games she plays in Writhe and how I am left a little puzzled.
Writhe is just the start to the Wellard Asylum collections. A series of unhinged and psychotic patents written by multiple different authors. A fun way to find new to you authors and see what their style is when it comes to Erotic Horror. So will you stick around and find out who the next patient will be?
