This was a new one for me and y’all, I can’t even begin to tell you how much I loved this. If you haven’t read the first book in this series, then you need to start with Taken Not Destroyed before reading this book. I hate to admit how it took me a solid minute to realize that this books MC’s weren’t the same as the last books MC’s. As it finally set in, I was absolutely loving that we tried a new (to me) dynamic where we watch the FMC, Rae, through out both of these books but end up having different MMC’s. To which, chefs kiss because my goodness we were not happy with the first MMC. This one though, perfect! I loved the dynamic.
Like I’ve said before, it takes skill to have the reader absolutely hate one of the MC’s and keep the readers attention the whole time. Last book we dealt with Hugo. The guy was part of the problem but you got a tiny glimmer of hope that he would change but sadly that wasn’t going to happen. In this book, we follow as Rae actually got away from Hugo (her escape was the ending of Taken Not Destroyed) and the cartel and managed to get herself safe. We pick up where she goes back home and ends up moving into an apartment with her daughter. She finds out some details about her husband and in general, she isn’t a fan of the man so she wakes up and decides to get a divorce.
Rae’s brother ends up giving her an opportunity to move to Texas and help a group gather information to get back one of the ladies she knew when she was captured. She jumped on that chance right away! This is where Rae meets Flinn, our MMC, the one we like! Rae and Flinn share a mutual attraction but don’t act upon this attraction for the reasons of trying to keep this a professional relationship. Well Flinn makes up a plan on how they could take down the cartel but sadly it involves sending someone from the team into the lions den. Sadly this plan would be so much better if it was a woman that went in for the team. Well the established female teammate stormed out like she wanted no part of it and Rae decides to volunteer. Look, I know that the other female character may not have been written in a way that she was rude but look, she was rude in my eyes. How you gonna be experienced in this group and just storm out of the room after the plan was said and not even take moment to think about doing your job?!?!?! Like I get no one would want to do that job but in my eyes, you would think she would step up and do her job. But thats my opinion. Any who, Rae goes in but like you may suspect, the plan doesn’t go how they were hoping. In the teams eyes, they thought that they would be able to keep an eye on her and keep her safe. They didn’t realize what they were up against. Rae was taken without a trace and they were playing catch up the rest of the book.
We are going to stop at this point because all of the plot twists, action pact moments, and smutty times happen after thing point. This is another one of those moments though where you have to read it yourself or I will give away way too many details. But I will say one thing and spoil the shit out of it for you, Rae is a badass and a freaking fighter. That is it.
Author S. Von really had me two seconds away from pacing my house trying to get through the last few chapters. I was absolutely shocked with the last 20% of the book. But the first 80%, that flew by watching Rae and Flinn come up with this amazing plan to get back the women that were taken from their families. So in reality we were just sweet talked the entire 80% and then ran over with a semi truck on the last 20%. But dang it, she can reverse and drive back over me if she wants. That was a dang good ending to this series!!!
I genuinely cannot get over how she managed to focus on one character for two books but bring in two different MMC’s but ends with the best MMC for Rae. This was only my second book from S. Von but I absolutely look forward to what will come next! S. Von, where we going next? We staying dark? Mafia? Romcom? Where you going next? Well either way, thank you for this ride!
