“I guess mom was right. The apple really didn’t fall far from the tree….. That is when I realized that it didn’t always matter what tree the apple fell from sometimes it was just rotten.” The quote that hit me and hit me hard. This review may be written a few weeks after finishing this book but I will say, I vividly remember listening to this audio and stopping it to write this quote down. This quote was the quote that hit you so hard in the feels that you just wanted to jump through the headphones and hug the character.

You see the MMC was hitting his low point of realizing that maybe just maybe he wasn’t going to mount to much like he had hoped he would. His mom was a druggie that didn’t seem to care about him at all. Yet everything he did was to help his mother. Now he did have a time where his grandparents were in his life and raised him since birth but sadly they both passed away. So sadly he was back into the care of his mother that didn’t change her world one single bit. But your heart broke when you realized he was trying to raise money to get his mother and him out of the town they were in but his mom sabotaged that the moment she saw how much money he had. I wont spoil how but the MMC does end up going to jail for a little bit and he gladly accepts the time.

He gets out and thankfully had the help of one of his CO’s from prison. The CO truly saw the good in him and wanted him to succeed in life. He helped secure housing and a job for the MMC. To which may not have been the best housing and job but the MMC didn’t mind. He was just thankful to be able to start back up with his life and try to do better.

The MMC ends up becoming friends with his neighbor kid and realizes he actually knows the kids mom. He actually played a big roll in her life before he did time. This time around though, he started to fall for the girl next door. But my favorite part, the son flat out called him out and said he only was friends with the son so he could get closer to the sons mom. While that wasn’t true in any means, it was absolutely refreshing to see the boy speak up on his thoughts and feeling. The MMC definitely took the time to just have one on one time and truly explained to the boy that he absolutely did not just use him but he is falling for the kids mom. He also reassured him that they will definitely be having their bro time. Aka this man was becoming like a father without even noticing. Even went as far as to one time say “you need to listen to your mom.” You could see the boy realized then that the MMC was absolutely there to be his friend too.

While the MMC kinda stole the show mostly,  the FMC also was shown through out this book. She came from a violent relationship and was doing her best to keep herself and her son safe. But that only can work so much when you were on your own and had to allow the father to see her son whenever he wanted. Some times it would be months in between their visits but sometimes it was only a few days. She did her best to give her son the life he deserved but she too was scared of the sperm donor.

In this book we watch their love start out as secret feelings, turned friends, turned lovers. This was an absolute amazing listen and I adored the entire book. I have to say Author Kelsey Kingsley did a beautiful job with this story and truly caught my attention. I enjoyed being able to feel like I was in the book and just a fly on the wall watching everything happen. The emotions were flowing during this book though! I am absolutely in loved with the MMC but at the same time my heart broke for everything he went through. Then I was also loving the FMC and her son but once again hated everything they were going through. This book brought out a lot of emotions but I think this was definitely one I should have listened to and I am thankful I did!! The audio was spot on!
