I think this has been a thing that every reader does. The author describes the MC’s and we instantly think of a celebrity that we think would fit that description. For example a lot of people think of Henry Cavill or if the book is motorcycle, they go towards the guy from Sons of Anarchy. Well I’m no different when it comes to this. Except, I am a mafia obsessed smut reader. I have a different idea in my head for each leader depending on their birthright. So instantly I get the knowledge that we are working with the Italian Mafia and it doesn’t matter how the MC will be described, I know in my head what this man is going to look like. So someone please explain to me how D. Vessa picked right from my brain the man of my thinking and actually said his name while describing that the MMC looked like his twin?!?! How did she know I imagine Michele Morrone?!?!
If it wasn’t perfect enough that she described my standard imagine for the Italian mafia boss, she some how also gave both the MC’s the personality of my husband and myself. I straight up cackled every time Matteo yelled “Get in the car” to Wren. It’s not meant in a rude way or to be of concern but sometimes you have a feisty moment and the husband is trying to get order back into life. But to read it, I lost it. Straight up lost it! So she picked my thoughts but then also wrote a swoon worthy MMC. Author D. Vessa just knows how to write a man. Oh Im excited to sit back to read more from her!!!
Ok let’s dive into this review. So we have a strong willed FMC named Wren, that was out taking a run like she does when she needs to clear her head. Hunny, why are we running?!?! I think she rethought her life choices when she stumbled upon Matteo. Matteo was a bit preoccupied, what with running into a tree with his car and all. Any who, she’s just trying to be a good samaritan and helping not bring bad karma onto herself (*cough cough it didn’t work*) by stopping and checking that he is ok. He quickly says she need to call his brother. So she does. Brother comes and takes care of everything and takes her back to her home She goes on with life like nothing ever happened. Well darling, I am so proud you really are a gem of a person but this looked to have backfired really fast. Matteo ends up showing up in her apartment to say thank you and left his number incase she needed help.
Sadly only a few days later she was being followed on her way home from work. She gets into her apartment and instantly texts Matteo and tells him to get his dogs. Aka, call your men off. Well I mean that would be easy to do if they were Matteo’s men but they weren’t. Well shorty is like ok this man will take care of it. No, no that didn’t happen. Not that he didn’t try. He did. But the criminal waited and then found their window of opportunity and broke into her apartment. She managed to fight (cause she’s a badass) and got away from the criminal. She calls Matteo and let him know that he didn’t do what he said he would by capturing the guy so she’s going to handle it herself. We all know where that leads.
Wren ends up being taken back to Matteos house and forced to live with him while he tries to continue to find the criminal. She keeps that spitfire personality the entire time and makes sure she doesn’t just conform to his wants. That is until he finally says he is interested in starting a relationship with Wren. This woman said “uh heck yes” and dove in without floaties. I mean can we blame her? The dude is a walking thirst trap and then you add in his filthy words. No wonder the woman was jumping off the diving board.
Through this time, both Wren and Matteo started to suspect someone that could maybe be partnering with the criminal. After one afternoon this person, let’s call him dick. Cause he is one. Dick one afternoon became really rude out of no where. He started calling Wren ungrateful and just treated her like she was a spoiled brat. Yet that was the furthest thing from Wren. Yes she gave Matteo hell but that didn’t warrant those types of comments. Dick was becoming more and more irate for no reason behind it. But in this world they didn’t want to suspect him and find out he was just having a few off days. So they waited to gather the intel they needed.
Im gonna have to stop here on talking about the book unless I give away spoilers. As where I described to leads us to a big party and thats all I can say. Everything after that needs to be read by your eyes in the book Cavalier by D. Vessa.
Author D. Vessa slayed again with this book. To which, if you don’t know, this is only her second book. Im absolutely floored that there is so much detail but at the same time such a beautiful pace to the books and she’s still so new to the writing game. She wrote Cain, to which I have a review up for, and this is in the same setting of Cain. We hear about a few of the characters from Cain but you don’t have to read Cain before you read Cavalier. You can read Cavalier first! I would recommend Cain to start though as timeline wise, Cain comes first and then we get to Cavalier. Yet you wont be completely confused and lost when reading this one first. That I appreciate so much! I love being able to see its interconnected but I can also read whichever book spiked my fancy, read that first, and then go to everything else.
D. Vessa really did a wonderful job describing two strong characters again. I loved seeing how this was a similar love story to Cain but yet it was completely different at the same time. The banter though, oh chefs kiss. I love the whitty remarks between all the characters. I look froward to seeing who we will read about next from Ravenna Heights. Im curious if we will go back to the Dirty Devils motorcycle club or will we see more from Matteo’s family? Either way, I am ready to make the next trip!
