I want to start this blog off with acknowledging that I am a dark romance girly that only dabbles in the sweeter side of romance. So when signing up for this read I was trying to push out of my comfort zone. I mean, I love the cheese hallmark movies but I am also going to love true crime. Now you can see that I was thinking, if I like this in shows, why wouldn’t I like it in books too? This is how I ended up with signing up for ARC reads that may not be my typical style.
This gamble paid off! (Un) Spoken turned out to be an unexpected surprise. I do want to say that this is the first book that I have read from the series, so jumping in at book 3 instead of the first book, probably was not the best idea. But I’m not gonna lie, I didn’t feel like I missed anything. This felt like an interconnected standalone sort of series so when I jumped in at three I felt like I still knew all the characters. Had I started with book one I would’ve known at least two different couples and their back stories before I started in with this books main characters. But at the same time, like I said, I really didn’t miss anything I felt like I knew these people and I’ve read their stories already. So I really appreciated being able to jump in not feel lost and just fully enjoy the entire story as I was reading it.
In this book we get to know Victoria and Adam. Victoria and Adam grew up together, as Adam is Victoria’s brothers best friend. They didn’t stay connected as her brother went off to the army but they reconnected years later when Victoria’s brother was about to get married. Now I’m going to say that Victoria and her brother do not have a strong relationship anymore but I’m not going to tell you why. I need you to take and read the book to find out those details. This is one of those moments where when you read it, it hit you harder than I could speak it. In actively trying to mend his relationship with his sister, Cole invited her to his wedding. Upon being in his hometown and realizing that Victoria didn’t know anybody he enlisted the help of his best friend Adam. Cole thought he could ask Adam to just keep an eye on her and also basically just be a friend to her. Cole knew that he had a long road ahead of him to get into his sister’s good graces. So why not ask for help from someone you knew your sister was comfortable with.
This plan soon backfires on Cole, yet he doesn’t know it! Victoria ends up making a move to kiss Adam but shortly into the kiss Adam pulled away. Not for the reason we think but because he felt like she was seeing this as a one night stand while he was looking at her as forever. But she didn’t see that and ran away. In the middle of the night she gets a phone call that her daughter was not feeling good so she immediately leaves the cabin and heads straight to her daughter. In the morning both Cole and Adam felt like it was their fault that she left but neither of them knew the actual reason. So they booked flights and they go to Victoria. Upon finding her, they find out that she is a mother and that Cole is an uncle. Cole did not know this detail due to the wishes of Victoria. Adams found this out and immediately fell in love with a little girl. This was also the point when Adam made it very well known to Victoria that he was there for the long haul. Finally pushing herself Victoria says yes and proceeds to start dating Adam and seeing where this will take her. Out of her comfort zone but also she had feelings for this man for years.
Yeah I’m going to say this real fast, we absolutely love that Victoria’s baby daddy is a genuine man. He wants nothing but to be part of his daughters life and a wonderful friendship with the mother of his daughter. Victoria and her ex work so well together but both fully understand there are no romantic feelings at all. So when she hears the offer to go back with her brother and the man of her dreams she’s hesitant because this means her daughter will have to move as well. But seeing as her ex is trying to be a pro baseball player he understands that his schedule doesn’t work necessarily for everyone but with upcoming time that he’s away he supports her in taking this adventure. He actually even suggest that she goes and says to her that she has done nothing but support him his entire career. He also said that he feels it’s time for her to do something for herself.
Victoria goes back to Cole and Adam along with her daughter this time. Adam really takes the time to show nothing but love to Victoria and her daughter and really become a staple of their life. He shows that he can be the type of man that Victoria wants in her daughters life. The only issue is Adam has a stalker. Adam has been fighting and dealing with a stalker for years but the police and everyone else have not been able to help him. It has gone to the point where he has needed to completely uproot his entire life and move somewhere else in hopes that he can get away from this person. Little did he know who the stalker actually was. After months of peace and quiet and working through all of this trauma with the therapist, he truly felt that he was away from the stalker. Well time will tell that that sadly was not the case. I’m not going to go on anymore about what’s happening in this book as I don’t wanna get away spoilers but y’all…. you need to read this book!
Author K.C. Brooks truly wrote a heartwarming book that just continues to play with your emotions. It was your standard romcom but at the same time talked about true life issues and struggles. She depicted them correctly and in a way that made you look at it from a different perspective than normal. This book definitely had my heart strings pulled a few times and I truly felt bad for the female main character. She truly gave up so much to help others and she continued to do that but was met with many negative reactions. This book was beautifully written that you felt like you witnessed an entire journey of someone’s romance. How do you manage to continuously keep my attention throughout the entire book? Like I said I’m not usually one to read just romance novels. I love the dark side of things and yes the stalker definitely scratch that itch. But this isn’t my typical style book. So I have my attention grabbed throughout the entire thing truly meant the world to me. This has me coming back to read the rest of the series too. Although I hate to say it it looks like we have to wait until next year for that book but that’s OK. I look forward to reading it then. If you’re into romcoms then I recommend adding this to your next read, it’s one that will definitely not disappoint you. I will say the spice levels low but that’s OK the plot is delicious and you’ll be happy with that.
