The Remains of Christmas

Don’t let the cover fool you! This book is jam packed with smut. I went into this read thinking we were going to get a simple romcom book based off the tropes and covers art. This is one where I am ok with taking back my original thinking!

This is a whirlwind love story that takes place in just a short span of time. We can see that the MC’s both fell fast and hard for each other right from the start. The MMC is a rich but humble man that doesn’t flaunt his wealth in the typical sense. I feel like a lot of the rich are snooty in books and this one shares how his family is highly into charity work but also staying humble. Now they will have no issue spending their money too on things that they want. But just because they spend their money, doesn’t mean they are pulling “look at me” kinda vibes. The MMC saved up for the nice car that he owns and just recently purchased it before he met the FMC. At work he will literally give the clothing off his back to help others stay warm in the cold temperatures. He really is a kinda hearted man that slowly develops a struggle to say no to the FMC.

I felt like the FMC was also a humble financially struggling character. One where you are barely making ends meet but you’re still pushing and putting in the work! You are legit my type of people. Ones that will work hard for their money and still juggle everything to make your dreams come true. Now one thing I wasn’t so excited about was it felt like she kept throwing it in the MMC’s face that he was rich. Making comments of “this is luxury” or “you’re reach for having a gift wrapping closet.” That’s me not liking a character not me disliking anything with the authors writing. This obviously pulled some emotions on my end. Now the FMC isn’t holding the wealth against the MMC so its more of a teasing manor. It just felt like it was brought up a few times.

The MC’s carpooled to a coworkers party and instead of trying to drive home they use the MMC’s family house to stay the night. After getting a little hot and heavy together they ended up spending 2 extra days “having fun” around the house before heading back to their actual homes. (Disclaimer: the MMC’s parents owned the house but weren’t home) On the way back home the MMC started to realize that he didn’t know the FMC was a student of his in the up coming semester. Due to this he tries to push the relationship away so that both futures of the MC’s would not be ruined. He continues to distance himself while the FMC continues to try to keep them close. It’s a battle of wills during this day. But with some crazy bends in the road, they end up one more night together and making the best of it.

Now at this point, I am going to stop sharing about the book so I don’t give any spoilers away. I felt like this was a really good read and it had my attention. The only issue, and why the rating was 4, that I had was it felt jumpy in the setting through out the book. I felt like one paragraph we were in “setting A” then the next paragraph we went to “setting B” without any advance warning. There was not page breaks or anything to indicate the upcoming changes. That just was a tad trippy and while it was, I still think the book was written very nicely.

I think Author Megan Montgomery really took the time to research what she was reading for this book so it was factual through out. She covered a lot about human anatomy of the skull but at the same time she used the proper terminology. I also felt she wrote the push and pull of the relationship beautifully. A good way to show that they truly wanted the relationship but also the MMC was thinking of the FMC’s future. He didn’t want to come between everything she had been working so hard on. Megan truly wrote a beautiful book that I recommend reading this holiday season. If you’re a mood reader and love to read themes for the holidays, this needs to be on your reading list!!!
