You know those books where you can’t be mad at the author because they absolutely nailed it with their writing but they left you broken? So now you are trying to trudge through the waters of your tears and figure out how to move on from this book. Like you just fell in love and then have a broken heart all in a matter of one book. Author Trinity Matthews just accomplished this scenario with her book “Somber Serenades.” I need time to recover but we are going to write this review in hopes to start the healing process.
This book starts out with the FMC and MMC meeting each other and instantly not liking each other. It gave off massive enemies to lovers vibes. The FMC actually threw a beer in the MMC’s face and we all had a smile across our faces when reading that. Both MC’s had their own struggles through out childhood and during this book you can see how they “dealt” with their past.
You felt the love between the MC’s when they finally started dating and it made me smile from ear to ear. I absolutely loved seeing the MMC stand up for the FMC multiple times. Showing her off as his girlfriend and he knew instantly that she was going to be his wife some day. I think everyone could see that from a mile away. I truly believe the FMC saw it too but just didn’t fully trust that she could have good things.
The FMC had taken a few tries at therapy but truly didn’t find the perfect therapist. If she did, I think the therapist could have done so much more. But alas, the end of the book is where everything turned upside down. We went from smiles to tears pouring down my face. The FMC was so strong, she didn’t see it. No scratch that, I think she saw it but I think she was finally tired of being so strong. I just wish she knew the MMC would have helped her. I mean I think she did but I think it was more so the feeling of not wanting to be a burden on someone else for her problems. It is the only mindset that makes sense because everyone can see that the MMC was so willing to drop everything and take on her load. She just didn’t see it like everyone else did.
Shout out to author Trinity Matthews for writing such a heartbreaking book but also writing a book that showed mental health struggles. I’m hoping that you are processing through writing this book. I thank you for taking the time to write something like this. We never see the real struggles from the person that smiles so big. They may drop hints. They may even fully tell us the trauma but that sadly doesn’t mean we will be the person they feel they can talk to in the time they need. Sometimes they just need to not feel anymore. I wish this book could have ended differently but even though it didn’t, this book was beautifully written.
Author Trinity Matthews has written such a beautiful descriptive book with Somber Serenades. This book made you feel all of the emotions. I truly couldn’t put it down and read this book faster than I would like to admit. While this was one of the more emotional books I have read, it did make me hooked onto Trinity Matthews writing skills. I look forward to reading more books by this author!
